How we’re different

Same tools.Different starting point.

We don’t start with SEO, advertising, websites, content or any other predetermined solution.

We start with the business outcome you’re trying to change—and work backward from there.

That means understanding the customer, identifying what’s actually getting in the way, and deciding what deserves your investment before deciding which tools to use.

Cool Shades Media is a business growth consultancy for owner-led businesses. We find out what’s holding growth back and decide which marketing investments deserve the money.

What are we actually measuring?

Marketing metrics are not business outcomes.

Rankings matter. Traffic matters. Impressions, clicks and engagement matter.

They tell us how people are finding you, what they’re responding to, where they’re dropping off and where opportunities may exist.

But they don’t tell us, by themselves, whether the business got better.

  • A #1 ranking without the right customers doesn’t create value.
  • More traffic without more qualified opportunities doesn’t create growth.
  • More engagement without meaningful action doesn’t change the business.

Those numbers aren’t meaningless.

They’re signals.

And signals are incredibly valuable when they’re used for what they’re actually good at: helping us understand what’s happening and make a better decision about what to do next.

Data informs the decision. The business outcome judges it.

  • Did more of the right customers find you?
  • Did more of them take the next step?
  • Did more of those opportunities turn into business?
  • Did it cost less to get a new customer?
  • Did the business generate more qualified leads, customers, bookings or revenue?

That’s the evidence.

Diagnose before you prescribe

Sometimes the right marketing decision is to do less marketing.

More isn’t always the answer.

If your business is already getting attention but the right customers aren’t taking the next step, buying more traffic doesn’t solve the problem.

It makes the existing problem more expensive.

The constraint might be

  • Your website
  • Your message
  • Trust
  • The offer
  • Customer education
  • Follow-up
  • Conversion
  • Measurement
  • Or it might actually be traffic.

That’s the point.

We don’t know until we understand what’s happening.

We don’t start by asking:

“What marketing should we do?”

We start by asking:

“What’s getting in the way of the business outcome?”

Then we decide what deserves your investment.

Strategy before services

Strategy comes before services.

If we begin with a predetermined solution, we’ve skipped the most important part of the work.

SEO might be the answer. So might paid advertising, content, a better website, conversion work, analytics, automation—or something else entirely.

But none of those decisions should come first.

We start with the business outcome. Understand the customer. Diagnose the constraint. Use data to inform the decision.

Then we choose the tools.

  1. Business outcome
  2. Customer
  3. Constraint
  4. Strategy
  5. Tools

The strategy determines the tools. The tools don’t determine the strategy.

The tools and technology will change.

The discipline of making the right decision first doesn’t.

The work doesn’t end at launch

We don’t measure to prove we were right.

A strategy is a decision based on the best understanding we have at that moment.

Then the market gets a vote.

Customers respond. Or they don’t. Behavior changes. Or it doesn’t. New information appears.

That isn’t the end of the strategy. It’s the next input.

We establish the baseline. Make the decision. Implement it. Measure what changed. Learn from the result.

Then we do something with what we learned.

Every result makesthe next decision better.

  1. Baseline
  2. Decision
  3. Action
  4. Measurement
  5. Learning
  6. Next decision

Not every decision will produce the result we expected.

The discipline is finding out why—and getting smarter because of it.

Better baseline. Better information. Better decision.

Then the cycle begins again.

What all of this is for

Better marketing
isn’t the goal.
A better business is.

We use marketing, technology, data and strategy to help businesses make better decisions about where to invest—and understand whether those decisions actually worked.

Because more activity isn’t the objective.

Measurable business improvement is.

The work should change the business.

Otherwise, what was the point?

Common questions

Questions about how we work.

How is Cool Shades Media different from a marketing agency?

We don’t start with SEO, advertising, a website or any other predetermined service. We start with the business outcome you want to change, find what’s getting in the way, and then choose the tools.

Does Cool Shades Media do SEO?

Yes, when the diagnosis shows it’s what the business needs. SEO, paid advertising, content, websites and analytics are tools we use. None of them is where we start.

Do rankings and traffic matter?

Yes, as signals. They show how people find you and where they drop off. The business outcome is the real test: more of the right customers, inquiries, bookings or revenue.

What if more marketing isn’t the answer?

Then we’ll say so. If people already find you but don’t take the next step, more traffic makes the problem more expensive.

What are you trying to change in your business?

You don’t need to know which service you need.

That’s our point.

Tell us what you’re trying to accomplish, what’s getting in the way, or simply what isn’t working the way you think it should.

We’ll start there.
